  • The Benefits of Compression Therapy

Compression stockings are widely used in Mississauga and Brampton to improve blood circulation throughout the body to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as strokes, heart attacks and other venous disorders. Whilst they have been around for more than half a century, more recently there has been increasing evidence to support the benefits of compression socks for people of all ages including pregnant women to elderly people.

This type of therapy is available in a variety of different types and styles including the following: socks, stockings, arm sleeves and much more. Graduated compression is applied to different areas of the body ensuring adequate blood flow is maintained so that organs receive enough oxygen to function. Additionally, compression therapy helps prevent fluid retention and improve pain that may occur as a result of weakened circulatory systems. By using compression stockings in Mississauga, Brampton and other areas of the GTA, patients can prevent as well as treat a number of conditions that affect the circulation of blood in their legs. This includes an improvement in the morbidity of various venous conditions including Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolisms and other complications in such as heart attacks and strokes.

Blood normally flows at an adequate rate throughout the body and returns back to the heart to receive more oxygen as it prepares to circulate throughout the body again. Leg movements and muscle actions prevent clots from occurring. Clots can occur as a result in an abnormality in the circulatory system, heart conditions or other unexplained reasons. These clots can be extremely dangerous and life threatening if not treated. Research has proven the positive benefits of compression therapy and the prevention of DVT’s or clot formation in various parts of the body. Compression stockings in Mississauga and Brampton are extremely helpful and beneficial in preventing fluid retention that can occur as a result of reduced blood flow to people of all ages with various conditions. Benefits of compression therapy have been observed in the following situations:

    • Pregnant women
    • Seniors
    • Heart conditions
    • Varicose veins
    • Lymphedema
    • Patients on hormone replacement therapy
    • Tired and achy legs

Immobility can be caused by numerous different factors; the most obvious of which include physical disabilities. Additionally, those who take long journeys such as on road trips or flights also suffer from a degree of immobility for a certain period of time. On average, it has been reported that one can spend an average of 400 hours a year in travel. Studies have shown that any prolonged periods of time spent sitting down will reduce the rate of blood flow back to the heart (venous return) and this will cause blood to build-up in the lower limbs. This is why on a long haul flight many of us will notice our feet are swollen at the end of a journey. Some tips to remember during long journeys include the following:

    • Stretch your arms and legs throughout your journey
    • Walk for a few minutes periodically
    • Compression stockings to minimize the degree of fluid retention, swollen limbs and clot formation

Compression stockings in Mississauga are also be helpful for athletes and people consistently on their feet to reduce the risk of complications and promote healthy living.
