  • Get Those Flu Shots and Protect Yourself

It’s that time of year again… Flu season is just around the corner! It is important to take those extra steps to protect you and your loved ones from acquiring and suffering from the common flu.

The flu, commonly known as the influenza virus, can be caused by many different viral strains. Research is gathered and analyzed over the year allowing health care professional to develop a vaccine that will protect against the strains for that year. Therefore, it is so important for one to receive the flu immunization yearly once the flu season begins. Usually, this occurs during the fall months and ends by mid-spring.

The flu vaccine is recommended for all individuals 6 months or older. It is particularly important for the following types of individuals:
    • Children younger than 5
    • Seniors
    • Pregnant women
    • People who work in hospitals and other large buildings
    • If they suffer from the following comorbidities:
    o Diabetes
    o Asthma
    o Hypertension (Blood Pressure)
    o Neurological conditions
    o Heart disease
    o Blood disorders
    o Weakened immune systems
    o Obesity

The flu shot is contraindicated in some groups of people including the following: allergy to a vaccine component including eggs, Guillain-Barre Syndrome patients or if they are unwell at the time of vaccine.

The most common misconception regarding flu vaccines is that people acquire the flu as a result of the vaccine. This statement is false as one can become sick from many other types of respiratory-related viruses that are not covered by the flu vaccine. In fact, the flu vaccine can actually reduce your duration of sickness if you do happen to get sick. Other reasons that may cause one to get sick despite receiving the flu vaccine include the following: a severely compromised immune system or if one’s immune system is not able to develop a full protection against the flu.

Do the right thing and protect you and your loved ones from the flu. Protect yourself and encourage your friends and family to protect themselves. Come in today to get your flu shot at Gore Pharmacy (Brampton) or Woodland Pharmacy (Mississauga)!
