The sun is out, the birds are chirping… it’s that time of time again – SUMMERTIME!

We want to share some important information and provide recommendations for appropriate, safe and effective sun care for you and your loved ones.

Sunscreen
offer“It is one of the most important skincare products to apply on a daily basis for people of all ages…rain or shine” says Neena Mithia, one of our registered pharmacists.

It is important to wear sunscreen even when performing daily activities such as going to work; not just when you go to the beach. The smallest amount of sun exposure can result in skin damage increasing your risk of permanent long-term health risks including skin cancer, wrinkles and premature aging.

The Canadian Cancer Society recommends using a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 15 or higher. A higher SPF is generally recommended for those that spend more time in the sun, are light skinned, or if they sunburn easily. Choosing a “broad spectrum” sunscreen that protects against both UVB and UVA sun radiation is extremely important in ensuring you achieve optimal protection and overall health benefits.

Reapplying sunscreen throughout the day is vital in ensuring that the most benefit is achieved from sunscreen wear. One of the most common mistakes we see in our sunburned clients is the lack of reapplying. It is recommended to reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours or more frequently if the person has been sweating or swimming.

Other Tips

  • Cover up – Wearing long-sleeved dark coloured clothing offers more protection
  • Sunglasses – Protect your eyes from long-term eye damage
  • Broad brimmed hats – Offers protection to the ears, scalp, neck and face
  • Avoid tanning salons – Can result in increase health risk with high intensity radiation exposure
