What If I Don’t Get Compression Garments?

Sometimes patients choose not to get compression garments, even though a health professional has suggested that they should. There are many downsides to not getting compression garments when you require them.
Enlarged Limbs and Infections
One of the risks associated with not getting compression garments when you need them are enlarged limbs and infections. Without the compression and the increased blood flow, the affected area can quickly get worse.
Clots are an issue that can happen if you do not wear compression stockings when advised by a healthcare professional. The pressure from the compression garment causes blood to circulate which keeps it from pooling or clotting.
Pulmonary Embolisms/Strokes
By not utilizing compression garments, pulmonary embolisms or strokes are possible. When blood pools, deep vein thrombosis can occur which can lead to pulmonary embolisms or strokes. By wearing compression garments, your blood will be forced to circulate which will eliminate the pooling of blood and therefore keep you safe.
Heart Attacks
Another possible result of not using compression garments is a heart attack. Compression garments help keep blood moving which helps treat heart failure and prevents heart attacks.
There are several negative consequences to not getting compression garments when you require them. Although compression garments may not be ideal, they can help prevent several negative outcomes as listed above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to frequently asked questions about Compression Garments. See the most common topics and more.
01. What is the Difference Between Regular Compression Therapy and Lymphedema Garments?
There is a very important difference between regular compression therapy stockings and Lymphedema garments. Lymphedema garments, unlike regular compression garments, are made from a rigid material that ensures they do not cut into the folds of the edema. If a regular compression garment is used on a Lymphedema patient, it can cause pain, circulatory inhibition, and even more swelling.
02. How do Compression Garments Work?
Compression garments work by compressing the area which improves blood and lymphatic circulation. For athletes, this allows blood flow to filter toxins from the muscles during exercise and allow them to be better oxygenated.
03. Why Should Compression Garments be Replaced?
ompression garments, when properly cared for, should last between 3 and 6 months. The life of the garment also depends on how often it is used. Over time the stocking can loose its integrity and not provide the level of compression required or intended to. Most insurance plans provide adequate coverage for multiple pairs per year to ensure that you receive the maximum therapeutic benefit from your stockings.
04. What are some Tips to Putting on Compression Garments?
There are many different ways to put on compression garments. We suggest that you: Use rubber gloves for extending the lifetime of your compression garments Put your arm inside the garment, pinch the heel, and turn the sock inside out Roll up the compression sock Smooth over the sock using rubber gloves to prevent any bunching on your skin
