What If I Don’t Get a Lymphedema Garment?

Sometimes patients choose not to get Lymphedema garments, even though a health professional has suggested that they should. There are many downsides to not getting Lymphedema garments when you require them.
Enlarged Limbs and Infections
One of the risks associated with not getting Lymphedema garments is enlarged limbs and infection. Lymphedema garments help increase your blood circulation which your skin benefits from. Healthy skin is more capable of fighting off bacteria and infection that it may come in contact with. This means that without the Lymphedema garment, you may no be able to fight off bacteria and infection.
Blood Circulation
Good blood circulation allows your cells to grow and your organs to properly function. Without Lymphedema garments, you may have poor blood circulation which can hinder this process. Poor blood circulation can also cause blood to pool, which can lead to blood clots or even pulmonary embolisms.
Lymphangiosarcoma
Lymphangiosarcoma is a rare form of soft tissue cancer. This cancer can be caused by not treating Lymphedema. Although not common, without using Lymphedema garments when prescribed, this cancer could affect you.
There are several negative consequences to not getting Lymphedema garments when you require them. Although Lymphedema garments may not be ideal, they can help prevent several negative outcomes as listed above.
